ATHENS, Ga. – The South Carolina track and field team hit 11 regional qualifying marks this weekend to conclude competition at the Spec Towns Relays hosted by the University of Georgia and the Sea Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee. The sixth-ranked men’s team collected seven qualifiers at Georgia while the 19th-ranked women’s team hit three at Georgia and one at Tennessee.
Johnathan Hancock won the men’s 100m dash at a season best10.37, and Antonio Sales took third at 10.54 as both men hit regional qualifying times. Sales also ran the 200m, taking second overall and first among collegians at a qualifying time of 21.14, a season best. Booker Nunley ran a 13.90 in the 110m hurdles for the second consecutive meet as the freshman won the event.
Michael Zajac hit his fourth provisional mark of the year in the hammer throw with a sixth place finish at 201-04 (61.36m). Jason Cook tossed a 63-07.50 (19.39m) in the shot put for his third qualifying mark of the season.
Obakeng Ngwigwa won the men’s 400m dash at 47.21, missing his second regional qualifying time by one-hundredth of a second.
Aimee Kodat led the women’s team with her first provisional qualifying mark of the year by setting a new personal best in the discus throw at 161-08 (49.28m). Kodat placed second in the event with her throw. Two sprinters also hit qualifying marks for the women’s team as Lakya Brookins ran a personal best 11.30 to win the 110m dash and Breehana Jacobs took third at 11.74. Brookins’s time ranks as the seventh best mark in the nation this year. The qualifying time is the first this year for Jacobs, who also placed second in the 200m dash at 24.06 seconds.
At the Sea Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., pole vaulter Sallie Gurganus took fifth in the event with her third consecutive provisional qualifying mark. Gurganus cleared 12-07.50 (3.85m).
South Carolina hits the road next weekend to compete at the Friendship & Freedom Games on the campus of North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C., home of the upcoming NCAA East Regional meet.
