CONWAY, S.C. – Sophomore Jill Semento struck again with her game-winning two-RBI single in the ninth to help propel South Carolina past Coastal Carolina, 6-2, at the CCU Softball Field on Wednesday evening.
After no one scored in the eighth with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, the Gamecocks (20-19) broke through in the ninth. The lead runner, junior Adele Voigt, moved to third on Lindsay Walker’s sacrifice bunt, and freshman Kristen Stubblefield got hit by a pitch to put runners at first and third ahead of Semento. Semento, who was 6-for-6 with nine RBI in her career coming into the night against the Chanticleers (15-30), made the home team pay for facing her after walking her three times earlier, taking one back through the middle to plate both Voigt and Stubblefield, who stole her way into scoring position. Freshman Evan Childs, playing in her hometown, added a pair of insurance runs as she drilled the 2-2 offering over the fence in left center, handing South Carolina the 6-2 advantage.
The Gamecocks struck first in the third when Stubblefield singled through the left side, scoring Voigt from third after she singled with one down in the frame. Voigt stole second and moved to third when the junior Walker reached on a wild pitch after a strikeout.
Coastal Carolina tied it in the fourth on Sarah Maples’s double into the left field corner, allowing Stacy Snellings to score after reaching on a single and moving to second on a wild pitch.
South Carolina got out of a jam in the sixth after Snellings led off the frame with a double. After a lineout, Snellings moved to third on Morgan Dodd’s sacrifice bunt. But Gamecock pitcher Krystle Robinson got a strikeout to end the threat.
With one down in the seventh, Stubblefield drove the 0-1 pitch over the wall in straightaway center to put the Gamecocks on top, 2-1. The lead was brief, however, as Coastal Carolina tied it up at 2-2 on Brittany Birnbaum’s single to center that rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Mecaela Ballard to score from first. Ballard reached on a two-out, full-count walk just ahead of Birnbaum’s hit.
Gamecock freshman Kierstyn White (9-2) got three groundouts in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game and finish off her ninth win of the season. She went 5.2 innings in total, giving up one earned run on five hits while fanning two. Ashley Frederick (6-9) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on one hits and a walk in three innings.
Stubblefield went 2-for-2 with a homer, while Voigt was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Stubblefield, Semento and Childs all collected two RBI.
The Gamecocks wrap up the road trip with a three-game series at No. 19/21 LSU, which starts with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
