NASHVILLE, Tenn. — South Carolina’s women’s tennis team wrapped up the second day of play at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic on Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.
Miljana Jocic headlined the Gamecocks’ efforts by reaching the finals of flight six following a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Kelsey Sundaram from Arkansas. Jocic will face Hannah Blatt of Vanderbilt on Sunday at 9 a.m CT.
South Carolina earned a couple of consolation victories in singles from Anna Morgina and Adriana Pereira in flights four and seven. Morgina upended LSU’s Ebie Wilson 6-2, 6-4, while Pereira picked up a victory after Valeria Makarycheva of Mississippi State retired in the first set down 5-0.
In the top singles flight, Ana Marija Zubori, who celebrated her 23rd birthday Saturday, withdrew from her singles match against Allie Will in the third set with Will leading 3-1. Will won the first set 7-5 before Zubori came back to take the second 6-4.
Dijana Stojic faltered in her match-up with No. 38-ranked Jackie Wu from Vanderbilt, falling 6-1, 6-1 in flight two, and Josefin Andersson suffered a 7-5, 6-3 setback to Claire Bartlett of Florida in flight five. The Gamecocks’ Rita Maisak also lost her semifinal match in flight eight, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Heather Bybee of Auburn.
In the morning session of doubles, South Carolina won two of three contests. Andersson and Stojic finished first with an 8-1 victory over the Kentucky duo of Broderick and Hines in flight two, while Morgina and Zubori beat Lukomskaya and Sundaram of Arkansas 8-6 in flight one. In the finals of flight four, Maisak and Pereira lost 8-4 to van de Stroet and Podlipnik of Ole Miss.
One round of singles is set for Sunday morning to conclude play in the SEC Fall Coaches Classic.
