CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team completed its first day of play at the UVa Invitational on Friday in Charlottesville, Va.

Miljana Jocic, Adriana Pereira and Rita Maisak all split singles matches on the day in flights A, B and C. Jocic lost her first match to Old Dominion’s Nadine Fanoum 6-1, 6-3 but recovered in the backdraw to upend Hana Tomljanovic from Virginia 6-4, 6-1. In flight B, Pereira cruised in her first match 6-1, 6-1 over Lucy Dougherty from UNC Greensboro but lost a three-set battle in the second 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-4 to Kristina Koprcina of Marshall. Maisak fell in her first match in flight C to Marlen Mesgarzadeh of William & Mary 6-1, 6-0 before defeating Dartmouth’s Julia Zak 6-1, 6-1.

Dijana Stojic also competed in the A draw with Jocic and suffered a pair of losses. The first came to UVa’s Erin Vierra 6-3, 6-2 and then Molly Scott from Dartmouth 6-1, 6-4. She and Jocic did, however, pick up a win in doubles in the A draw against Scott and Winingham of Dartmouth 8-4.

Play continues in the UVa Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
