BLACKBURG, Va. – The South Carolina track and field programs concluded competition Saturday at the Hokie Invitational on the campus of Virginia Tech with wins in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.

Junior Shayla Mahan took first in the women’s 200m with a time of 24.13 to lead a 1-2-3 finish in the event. The seventh-ranked women’s team also earned a victory in the 400m from sophomore Nadonnia Rodrigues with a run of 54.60.

Mahan was followed in the 200m by classmate Gabrielle Glenn (24.56) and freshman Tatiana Fisher (24.56). Another freshman, Breanna Hubbard, claimed ninth in the event with a time of 25.21.

Rodrigues, the 2009 SEC Indoor Freshman Runner of the Year, picked up where she left off last season with her victory in the 400m. Six-time All-American Brandi Cross came in third at 55.04. Rodrigues and Cross also teamed with Glenn and Breehana Jacobs to claim third in the 4x400m relay at 3:43.00.

In the distance events, freshmen Sierra Henderson and Megan Rother took fourth and ninth, respectively, in the 800m run as both came close to earning the first provisional qualifying times of their careers. Henderson crossed at 2:16.88, and Rother crossed at 2:19.64. In the field events, senior Vica Shobe placed sixth in the pole vault at 12-06.25 (3.82m) to lead the Gamecocks. Sophomore Katie Vuckovich led Carolina in the shot put with a toss of 45-01.00 (13.74) to place fifth. Freshman Breanna Radford followed in seventh place with a toss of 44-07.50 (13.60) to claim seventh.

For the 12th-ranked men, Johnny Dutch earned second place in another event this weekend after running a 48.40 in the 400m dash to lead a 2-3-5 Gamecock finish in the event. Senior Obakeng Ngwigwa ran a 49.20 to place third, and junior Antonio Sales ran a 49.83 to start the season and place fifth. In the 4x400m relay, Ngwigwa teamed with Scott Pierce, Antonio Sales and Booker Nunley to place fourth with a time of 3:15.84.

Alex Bermudez claimed 15th in the 800m run with a time of 1:59.83. In the field event, Louis Day led the Gamecocks with a toss of 49-03.50 (15.02m) in the shot put to place 11th.

South Carolina returns to Blacksburg next weekend when the team participates at the Hokie Invitational January 22-23.
