South Carolina Head Coach Ray Tanner
On Gamecock reliever Jay Brown against Brown
“The only chance we had to win that game was to get a stellar performance out of the bullpen, and Jay (Brown) was very good today. He was able to get his breaking ball over, and he slipped his fastball in there at times. We dug ourselves a hole. (Sam) Dyson wasn’t very sharp tonight. They hit him around. We had innings left, but we were going to have to have a good performance out of the bullpen, and Jay Brown stepped up big for us.”
On Christian Walker, Nick Ebert, and the pitching staff
“I’m trying to be optimistic with (Christian) Walker and (Nick) Ebert. If they have a good swing, I’m trying to hang on to that. I thought (Nick) Ebert had a couple of good things today. (Christian) Walker had a couple of good passes, but with the infield in he wasn’t able to get the run in. That was disappointing. We played hard today. (Blake) Cooper was hard to hit. He didn’t have his best control today, but he had good stuff. They didn’t get a lot of hits against him and gave us a chance to win that game. Ethan Carter threw well. Matt Price, even though we had a four run lead, threw the ball well out of the bullpen today.”
On Brown
“Brown has a good team. I told our guys prior to the game today that Brown is a team that can win the Ivy League. They will probably end up in the postseason. Both games were hard for us, but we were able to get the wins.”
On Parker Bangs
“He gave us a lift today. No doubt about it. We went into the season thinking he’d get a chance to hit against left-handed pitchers. It worked out well for him today so he’ll probably get another chance to do it again.”
