ATHENS, Ga. – South Carolina’s women’s golf team fought against a tough golf course – as did the rest of the field – on Friday and shot a 324 (+36) to tie for 19th place after one round at the Liz Murphey Intercollegiate Classic.

Freshman Amanda Strang was the Gamecocks’ leader on a tough day for scoring, posting an 80 (+8) to stand tied for 46th place through 18 holes. Scoring was tough for everyone on the opening day as fourth-ranked Duke holds the 18-hole lead after an opening-round 300 (+12). North Carolina, Purdue and Auburn were 10 strokes back, tied for second with a 310 (+22). The Blue Devils’ Lindy Duncan leads after the tournament’s only round under par with a 2-under 70, and Calle Nielson (Virginia), Marta Silva Zamora (Georgia) and Cheyenne Woods (Wake Forest) are tied for second at 2-over.

The Gamecocks will be paired with Georgia State, Furman and Ole Miss for the second round with their tee times beginning at 9:55 a.m. on the No. 10 tee. Live scoring is available through GolfStat.com.
