COLUMBIA, S.C. – Despite a career-high seven strikeouts by sophomore pitcher Kelsey Goodwin, Auburn (17-12, 3-6 SEC) used a pair of two-out, two-run home runs to take a 4-1 victory over South Carolina (10-20, 0-11 SEC) in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at Beckham Field.
Neither team had much offense through four innings. Tiger right fielder Krista Clyde broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth when she lined the 3-2 pitch with two outs over the right-field wall for a two-run homer. That scored Katie Colton, who led off the frame with a walk. Clyde added a second blast to left with two down in the seventh, plating Colton again, this time after a leadoff single.
Sophomore Kaitlin Westfall put the Gamecocks on the board in the seventh with an RBI single up the middle, driving home junior Laura Mendes. Sophomore Lauren Lackey tripled for the first Gamecock hit.
Auburn pitcher Anna Thompson (8-5) tossed the two-hitter, striking out 10 while walking two en route to allowing one unearned run. Goodwin (0-11) got the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits and a walk. She struck out a career-high seven batters.
