GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Benedicte Toumpsin and sophomore Katie Burnett tied for 20th place as the South Carolina women’s golf team finished in ninth place at the Bryan National Collegiate, shooting 297 (+9) in Sunday’s final round to finish at 893 (+29) overall.

Toumpsin shot 73 (+1) in her final round – her best score of the week – to get to 222 (+6) for the week and earn her second top-20 finish of the season. Starting on hole No. 7 with the shotgun start, the Belgium native had a bogey on her third hole of the day, but then responded with a birdie and an eagle on consecutive holes to get to 2-under. Three straight bogeys would put her back over par, but she would par her final nine holes to close out the tournament.

Burnett, a native of Brunswick, Ga., also finished at 222 (+6) and tied for 20th place, her sixth top-20 finish in eight events this year. She closed with a 76 (+4) that included two birdies, two bogeys and a pair of double bogeys on the day. Burnett has been either the top finisher or tied for the top spot on the team in five of eight tournaments this season, including three in a row.

Freshman Amanda Strang had her second straight solid round, shooting a 1-over 73 to tie for 35th place at 225 (+9). She had three bogeys on the day, but got two of those shots back on one swing as she eagled the par-4, 389-yard first hole, which was her 12th of the day. Senior Taylor Barrett shot 76 (+4) on Sunday to finish tied for 54th, and senior Corrine Carr tied for 63rd after closing with a 75 (+3) on Sunday.

Florida State outlasted co-host Wake Forest for the team title as both teams posted scores of 294 (+6) on the day; FSU finished at 873 (+9) and Wake was at 874 (+10). Ohio State, Vanderbilt and Duke tied for third at 886 (+22). The Demon Deacons’ Cheyenne Woods was the individual medalist at 211 (-5), with Tennessee’s Nathalie Mansson in second and Virginia’s Brittany Altomare and Duke’s Lindy Duncan tied for third.

The Gamecocks will have two weeks off before the 2010 Southeastern Conference Championship, which runs April 16-18 at the NorthRiver Yacht Club outside of Tuscaloosa, Ala.
