South Carolina vs. Furman (May 18, 2010)
Head Coach Ray Tanner Post-Game Quotes
On tonight’s game…
“I told the players I was ok with being where we were in the seventh inning because [Furman’s Starting Pitcher] Barry Benton pitched a great game. We don’t see a lot of guys like that. He had a great year for Furman, but he made pitches. We got a few hits and a few quality at bats, but we weren’t pushing runs across. We were going to find a way to figure it out at some point. We had some aggressive mistakes. You can’t make those mistakes. I try not to complain too much about physical mistakes.
I thought the key for the game on being where it was in the seventh inning was that Barry Benton pitched great.”
On the upcoming series against Florida…
“It’s exciting. You want to be in a situation where you can battle and compete for championships. There are so many great teams in our league, great venues, great coaches and players, it’s hard to get in this situation.”
“It’s hard to figure that you are playing a team that we are tied with. I don’t know if it has ever come down to that in SEC baseball with two teams playing each other.”
“I am excited about the weekend. I know how good they are, they are talented and they can do a lot of things that can beat you. But I think it is exciting. It is just a wonderful position for both of us to be in, and we are playing at home.”
On Scott Wingo and Bobby Haney…
“We have two guys in the middle [of the field] that play defense. They have a role. They have a niche on this team that they can do some things to contribute. You give and take, and although Bobby’s numbers have picked up, from where they were, they both play a vital role for us.”
