Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina junior right-handed pitcher Sam Dyson has been selected in the fourth round of the 2010 MLB Draft. Dyson was the No. 126 overall pick in the draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He is the first current Gamecock player to be selected in this year’s draft.

For the season, Dyson is 5-5 with a 4.00 ERA in innings pitched. He has 93 strikeouts and opponents are batting just .243 against him. Dyson earned SEC Pitcher of the Week honors following his six-hit complete game shutout as the Gamecocks defeated nationally ranked Arkansas 5-0 clinching a three-game SEC baseball series at Baum Stadium. Dyson had a tremendous outing as he limited the Razorbacks, who came in ranked second in the league in hitting and runs scored, to just six hits and walked only two on the afternoon. He struck out eight batters and went to only three three-ball counts in the game. This was the second time this year that Dyson has earned SEC Pitcher of the Week honors. He also earned the award after he hurled a seven-inning complete game shutout in a win at Georgia on April 25.

2010 – No-decision in 9-5 win over Bucknell at NCAA Regional (6/4); allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in five innings of work … Quality start in 5-2 loss vs. Florida (5/21); allowed four runs on five hits in 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts and one walk … Named SEC Pitcher of the Week for the second time in the season with a six-hit complete game shutout with eight strikeouts in 5-0 win at Arkansas (5/15) … Pitched second complete game of season in 2-1 loss at Kentucky (5/8); allowed two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and four walks … Hurled season-high 7.1 innings in loss vs. Alabama (5/1); struck out a season-high 10 batters and walked just one, allowed five runs on eighth hits … Named SEC Pitcher of the Week after hurling first career complete game shutout in seven-inning 5-0 victory over Georgia (4/25); allowed just three hits and struck out five batters in the win … Won 20th career game as he hurled 6.1 innings allowing five runs, all unearned, on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 9-5 win over Ole Miss (4/17) … Earned win at Auburn with seven scoreless innings of work, struck out nine batters and did not walk a batter in 2-0 win (3/27) … Quality start in 10-7 win over Tennessee, allowed just two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings of work (3/20) … No-decision in start of 7-5 win vs. Clemson (3/6), allowed four runs on five hits with a season-high seven strikeouts … Made second straight start and worked four innings, allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and five strikeouts at East Carolina (2/27) …. Earned win in predetermined split vs. Duquesne working 3.2 hitless innings and striking out six of 12 batters faced (2/20).

2009 – Selected by the Oakland A’s in the 9th round of the 2009 MLB Draft … Picked up win vs. George Mason in NCAA Regional, allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings with five strikeouts and four walks, a 11-3 victory over GMU (5/29) … Quality start in 5-4 loss vs. Vanderbilt at SEC Tournament earned a no-decision, allowed four runs on eight hits in seven innings of work with eight strikeouts and one walk (5/21) … Earned SEC Pitcher of the Week honors after hurling a complete game in 7-2 win over Georgia (5/14), allowed just two runs on four hits with career-high 13 strikeouts … Worked 8.2 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts in 8-5 win over Vanderbilt (5/1) … First career complete game in 8-3 win over Auburn (4/19), allowed just three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk … Earned victory in 12-10 win over Ole Miss, hurled 5.2 innings and allowed seven runs, five earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts and four walks (4/10) … Improved to 4-1 with victory at Kentucky (3/28), allowed eight runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings … Defeated fifth ranked LSU with seven innings of two-hit ball, allowed just one run in 7-3 victory over Tigers (3/21) … First career loss at Mississippi State (3/14), allowed eight runs, seven earned on nine hits in 4.1 innings … Did not allow an earned run in seven innings of work, a 15-8 win over Long Beach State, improved record to 2-0 on the year … Pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just one run on two hits in 3-1 win at Clemson, retired first 13 batters he faced (2/28) … Five scoreless innings in season opener, a 13-0 win over Duquesne (2/21) … Struck out six and allowed just one hit in the victory.

2008 – Earned Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball … Posted 8-0 record with a 4.09 ERA in 12 appearances and nine starts … Pitched 50.2 innings and struck out 44 batters to 28 walks … Earned win vs. Charlotte in NCAA Regional after 6.2 innings of work, allowed seven runs on 11 hits in victory … Solid first career start vs. an SEC school at the SEC Tournament; pitched 6.2 scoreless innings vs. LSU. limited Tigers to just two hits … Earned win in 10-2 victory over The Citadel; allowed just two runs and struck out seven in victory (5/14) … Worked five-plus innings in 10-5 win at Wofford; struck out six and walked three in win (4/23) … Earned win vs. USC Upstate; went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks (4/15) … Also defeated Western Carolina after five innings of work allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts … Career-high seven innings with career-high eight strikeouts to earn win in 5-3 victory over College of Charleston (3/26) … Pitched 0.1 innings and earned first career win in 7-6 victory over East Carolina (2/24) … 2008 SEC Academic Honor Roll member.
