COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina softball team, with 13 returners and 10 newcomers, met for the first time in a group setting with new head coach Beverly Smith, assistant coach Janelle Breneman and support staff that also included the student-athletes’ parents.

Deputy athletics director Marcy Girton welcomed Smith to the group that numbered nearly 80. Smith talked briefly about her excitement to get going after introducing Breneman to the room. Then the support staff members introduced themselves before the players did the same. Each player had to come up with something interesting about them, which revealed some recent converts to the Gamecock Nation. Information on the new additions will be coming soon to GamecocksOnline.com, so check back.

The department provided snacks and drinks for the group, including a cake that had Welcome Carolina Softball in the icing.

The team kicks off workouts for the fall this week, as classes begin again on Thursday. A fall schedule will be announced at a later date.
