MILWAUKEE — The South Carolina women’s tennis team posted an undefeated record on the first day of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Friday at the Town Club.
In singles play against players from Kansas State, 70th-ranked Anya Morgina defeated Karla Bonacic 6-0, 6-3 to run her record to 4-0 this fall. Dijana Stojic, ranked 58th, upended Petra Niedermayerova in three sets 3-6, 6-4, (10-7) in her first match of the year. Katerina Popova topped Carmen Borau Ramos 6-1, 6-0 in her first match as a Gamecock, while fellow freshman Dominika Kanakova defeated Nina Sertic 7-5, 6-1 after falling behind 5-1 in the first set. Miljana Jocic won 6-0, 6-4 over Petra Chuda in her first match of the fall, while Madeleine Saari-Byström improved to 3-1 on the year with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph versus Ana Gomez Aleman.
The Gamecocks concluded the day with doubles matches against host Marquette. Kanakova and Morgina stayed unbeaten this fall with an 8-3 win over R. Hush and Ruiz by an 8-3 count and are now 4-0 together. Saari-Byström and Jocic improved to 3-1 thanks to a 9-7 win against Calderon and G. Hush. Popova and Stojic teamed up to defeat Fischer and Barry by an 8-3 count.
Play in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic continues Saturday with the Gamecocks playing singles contests against Marquette and doubles versus Western Michigan.
