MILWAUKEE — The South Carolina women’s tennis team dropped just one match on its second day of play in Milwaukee at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic to run its record at the event to 17-1 heading to Sunday.
The Gamecocks faced off with host Marquette in singles. Dijana Stojic won her second three-set match in as many days with a 3-6, 6-2, (12-10) triumph over Paola Calderon. Katerina Popova also improved to 2-0 this year thanks to a 6-4, 7-5 showing against Gillian Hush. Miljana Jocic defeated Olga Fischer 6-2, 6-2 and moved to 3-1, while Madeleine Saari-Byström went to 4-1 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Rachael Hush. Dominika Kanakova got above .500 to 3-2 after upending Chelsea Utting 6-0, 6-0. Marquette’s one victory came from Kelly Barry, who topped Anya Morgina 7-6, 7-5.
In doubles, South Carolina took on Western Michigan and scored a trio of wins. Jocic and Morgina combined to win 8-6 over Moccia and Kerr. Kanakova and Stojic beat Nivia and Pastunink 8-2, and Popova and Saari-Byström also won 8-2 versus Remynse and Shustova. Kanakova and Morgina both own 5-0 records in doubles this fall, while Saari-Byström and Jocic are 4-1.
South Carolina will wrap up play in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Sunday playing doubles against Kansas State and singles versus Western Michigan.
