COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team’s schedule for 2011 is set, head coach Arlo Elkins announced Friday.
Twenty matches are currently on the slate, however, one more opponent may be added at a later time. South Carolina will square off against at least 12 teams that competed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament and could face more depending on its performance in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The Gamecocks open the spring Jan. 25 at Furman for a match-up with the Paladins. Carolina then heads to Coral Gables, Fla., for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by Miami. South Carolina faces Arizona State on Jan. 29 and then either host Miami or Florida International the next day. The winner of the region moves on to compete in the 16-team ITA National Indoor Team Championships hosted by Virginia from Feb. 18-21.
Feb. 23 marks South Carolina’s home opener against Winthrop. The Gamecocks then travel to face rival Clemson on Feb. 27 before starting SEC play on the road at Arkansas on March 4 and LSU on March 6. South Carolina hosts Auburn on March 11 and Alabama on March 13 and then takes a break from SEC play during Carolina’s spring break. South Carolina begins spring break with a home contest against VCU on March 16 and then travels to Charleston, S.C., to play College of Charleston on March 20.
The Gamecocks finish out the SEC season first playing at Mississippi State on March 25 and then hosting Ole Miss on March 27. The entire Eastern Division awaits South Carolina in April starting with road matches April 1 and 3 at Vanderbilt and Kentucky. South Carolina hosts Tennessee and Georgia on April 8 and 10 and ends the regular season April 16 at 2010 NCAA runner-up Florida.
Tennessee will host the 2011 SEC Tournament over April 21-24 in Knoxville, Tenn. First- and second-round NCAA competition takes place during May 13-15 at 16 campus sites and Stanford hosts the men’s and women’s championships May 19-30.
