COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior sprinter LaKya Brookins has been named the SEC Female Runner of the Week after her strong season-opening weekend, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Brookins ran one of only two automatic qualifying times of the year in the women’s 60-meter dash in winning the event at the Virginia Tech Invitational in 7.25. Brookins punched her ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships in just her first race of the year. She is the only SEC women’s athlete to earn an automatic qualifying time in any running event, and is one of only two SEC women’s athletes overall to earn an automatic bid.

South Carolina returns to action this weekend when the team returns to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the Hokie Invitational.
