South Carolina Head Coach Ray Tanner Quotes
On the day as a whole
Part of opening day today was celebrating the past. Sometimes I imagine that it would be difficult to go out and play after, but we talked about it and I thought our guys came out and played well early. That was what we needed. That was the main reason that Michael Roth was on the mound. It was a good game for us and it was a good win. I know it got a little tight there in the eighth when they started stringing together some hits. Scott Wingo came up with a big defensive play to help it be less difficult then it could have been, but we answered back in the bottom and we scored some runs.
On the play of Jackie Bradley Jr.
He is a good player. Even the great ones in this game make outs and he did not make an out today. He was up there in some big situations, but that is what you want. You want your guys to be up in big at bats and in clutch situations. Today he came up in some critical situations and got it done for us. It was a special game for him opening up with a day like that.
On the ability to close out the game
It was important to answer back in that situation. We had Matt Price in the bullpen ready to go, but John Taylor got us a ground ball. Then, we came back in and answered. Santa Clara has a solid club and we knew that coming in today.
Junior OF Jackie Bradley Jr.
On his play today
I am seeing the ball really well right now. I am just trying to see my pitches and not miss. It was a great day and we went out and got the win.
Senior P Michael Roth
On the emotions of starting the opening game of the season
It really was an honor to pitch today. It took a little extra focus, but it was very special day for me be cause I got the chance to do that, and we went and got the win.
Senior 2B Scott Wingo
On the double play that ended the Santa Clara eighth
That was a big double play that Mooney turned. It was a big play in a big part of the game. We really needed that and John (Taylor) got it done.
Sophomore First Baseman Christian Walker
On his homerun in the eighth
The double play gave us some momentum going into our at bat. I just wanted to help the team out. I had a base hit earlier in the day, but it was nice to feel like I helped the team out with that hit.
