Head Coach Ray Tanner
Opening statement:
As is the case in our game, pitching gives you an opportunity to win and Tyler Webb was very good today, I feel like that was one of the better performances he’s had since he became a Gamecock. And as equally impressive was Cody Forsythe (of Southern Illinois), he was good as well, his line looks good.
On Tyler Webb
I just think he is more comfortable, he came here to get an opportunity to get on the mound. And as a true freshman that is not easy at this level. He has worked awfully hard. He got himself in the position to get some innings last year, got some starts, got some innings under his belt and I think he has three appearances out of the bullpen in the College World Series. He put himself in a position to start and it looks like he wants to stay there.
On Adam Matthews
He did a good job for us, the athleticism that he has is as good as any player in the country. He is tough, he’s tough to defend because he can bunt both sides of the mound, he has some power so you have to be careful of the way you pitch him. And he creates havoc for us if he gets on base, and even if he doesn’t get on base he certainly makes the pitcher and catcher conscious of where he is and get the hitter a chance to get a hit.
Pitching felt good, I just tried to get ahead with my fastball, work it in and out then later on in the game throw in my change up and get them a little off balance.
Every week I’m trying to get better. I’ve been working on some stuff.
I think mechanically I’m a little more sound, my delivery is a lot better this year than it was last year. I don’t get wrapped up as much as who we are playing this year as I did last year. And I just try and pound the zone with my fastball.
On batting order
As long as I’m contributing to the team I can it wherever. I can hit at the top of the order or the bottom. I’m just trying to get on base, wherever I am hitting just trying to have good at bats and get in scoring position and hopefully the guy behind me hits me in.
