South Carolina Head Coach Ray Tanner
Opening Statement
The first two games of the series I thought we did some things well to stay in position to win. Today with (Tommy) Hoenshell on the mound for them you can’t afford to give opportunities away, and that’s what we did with some walks and a tough error. That being said, (CSU) Bakersfield has a nice club. They were able to capitalize on some opportunities and they had a guy on the mound that knows how to pitch. We battled, but they were able to make some plays as well.
On Tyler Webb…
I thought Tyler had his best fastball of the season early on, but then he started missing. The umpire had a good zone. He wasn’t giving too much either way off the plate. Tyler was just missing. He wasn’t that far off, but at the end of the day, he wasn’t sharp. He got to do a better job than that. (Forrest) Koumas had some nice pitches, but they were able to swing it well against him.
Thoughts on the season thus far…
If you’re going to make me do an evaluation at 13 games in, and we’ve won 11, I’ll sign for that without question after the schedule that we’ve had. It has not been easy; we’ve played pretty good people. We’ve done a nice job, we’re not perfect and we didn’t play our best game today. I thought Bakersfield was a quality team. We’ve been tested. We have some guys do well and some other guys, not so much. A couple of our guys don’t have the offensive numbers they’re accustomed to having, so they’re pressing a little bit. We’re prepared going into two more non-league games this week, then our conference schedule starts up. We’ve played a good schedule and we’ve won our share of games.
On the lineup change…
It didn’t work. I’m just trying to get it going a little bit. (Peter) Mooney was in there at the beginning of the year. Sometimes you put him in there, he gets a couple hits, and he feels pretty good up there. It didn’t work out today. We’ve got to try to find the right combination. I just thought (Evan) Marzilli needed a day off, but it won’t stay that way. He’s one of our guys.
Tyler Webb, Pitcher
On his performance today…
I didn’t throw enough strikes today. I don’t know, my arm felt good. I felt fine. I wasn’t throwing enough strikes
Jake Williams, Left Fielder
On CSU Bakersfield’s pitcher Tommy Hoenshell…
He did a good job of getting us to just miss some balls. We had quite a few we just missed over in right field. He was throwing a lot of strikes, and he was throwing all his pitches for strikes. That was the main thing for him; he had all his pitches working. He was keeping us off balance.
Christian Walker, First Base
On CSU Bakersfield’s pitcher Tommy Hoenshell…
His fastball wasn’t really overpowering. I think it was good enough with his breaking stuff. He did a good job. He did what they wanted. He’s a starting pitcher and he kept us to one or two runs. It was just one of those days. We had a couple hits, but they just weren’t together. Sometimes that’s just how it goes.
Jose Mata, Pitcher
On his performance today…
Today I was able to command the bottom of the zone a lot easier. The last few outings I gave up a couple of walks and hits. I was leaving a lot more balls belt high. I was able to stay knee high for the most part and really command the fastball.
