BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. – Freshman Samantha Swinehart led South Carolina in Friday’s opening round of the Bryan National Collegiate as the Gamecocks are tied for ninth place through 18 holes at the Bryan Park Champions Course. The Gamecocks posted a team score of 305 (+17) on a day that saw few low scores throughout the field.

Swinehart shot a 1-over-par 73 to move into a tie for 10th place through one round of play. The freshman from Lancaster, Ohio, was even par through eight holes after a bogey at No. 2 and a birdie at the eighth, but made two bogeys on either side of the turn to move to 2-over through 10. A birdie-bogey stretch on the next two holes left her 2-over, but she played the final six holes bogey-free, including a birdie at the 17th to finish with a 1-over-par day. She is tied with four others for 10th place, one shot back of a six-way tie for fourth place at even par.

Fellow freshman Suzie Lee was also impressive in her first appearance of the spring season, posting a 2-over-par 74 to tie for 15th place through one round of play. Lee had just one misstep on the day, a triple-bogey at the par-4 fifth, but an otherwise very solid round. She made three birdies on the day, including two on the back nine, to play her last 13 holes at even par and finish the day at 2-over.

Sophomore Amanda Strang had a pair of birdies but also two double-bogeys en route to a 6-over-par 78. She made the turn at 5-over after doubles at the first and eighth holes, but played her final nine holes at just 1-over par with a birdie at No. 13. Junior Katie Burnett and freshman Katie Rose Higgins both posted rounds of 80 (+8), and sophomore Meredith Swanson, playing as an individual, shot 83 (+11).

Tennessee was the only team in the tournament to stay at level par with a 288 (E), and the Lady Vols hold a six-shot lead over Wake Forest through one round of play. North Carolina is in third place at 295 (+7). Individually, UT’s Erica Popson and Wake Forest’s Michelle Shin are tied for the lead at 2-under, with Louisville’s Laura Anderson third at 1-under-par.

The Gamecocks will begin their second round with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Saturday, paired with Louisville and Washington. Live scoring is available through golfstatresults.com.
