BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. – Freshman Samantha Swinehart had her second straight impressive round Saturday and moved into the top five through two rounds at the Bryan National Collegiate. The Gamecocks, for the second day in a row, shot a 17-over-par 305 and are in 11th place with one round to play.

Starting on the sixth hole with the shotgun start, Swinehart had three bogeys in her first 13 holes and headed back to finish holes 1-5 at 3-over. But she closed strong, playing bogey-free over her final seven holes and making birdies at Nos. 3 and 5 to post her second straight round of 73 (+1) to put her at 146 (+2) for the tournament and tied for fifth place, just three shots out of the lead.

Sophomore Amanda Strang was one shot better on Saturday with a 77 (+5). A birdie at her second hole, No. 9, got her off to a great start, but a pair of bogeys and a double-bogey on the back nine left her at 3-over through 11 holes. She would then roll off six straight pars but closed with two straight bogeys to finish at 5-over for the day. Freshman Suzie Lee matched Strang with a 77 (+5) of her own as she is tied for 28th place. She made two bogeys in her first three holes, but then played the back nine in just 1-over par to stand 3-over through 12. But like Strang, she had a pair of bogeys down the stretch to finish a 5-over day.

Junior Katie Burnett improved by two strokes over her first-round effort with a 78 (+6), an up-and-down round that included three birdies, seven bogeys and a double-bogey. Katie Rose Higgins shot an 83 (+11) in the second round, and sophomore Meredith Swanson recorded an 81 (+9) playing as an individual.

Wake Forest took a one-shot lead at 589 (+13) as first-round leader Tennessee dropped 14 shots on the day to stand at 590 (+14). Duke and Virginia are tied for third place at 594 (+18). Duke’s Laetitia Beck is the individual leader at 143 (-1) after recording just one of two rounds under par for the day. Three players are tied for second place at 1-over-par, and Swinehart is part of a three-way tie for fifth at 2-over.

Sunday’s final round gets underway with another 8:30 a.m. shotgun start as the Gamecocks are paired with Washington and Florida State for the final 18 holes. Carolina will start on holes 10-12 with Swanson, as an individual, starting on No. 18. Live scoring is available through golfstatresults.com.
