COLUMBIA, S.C. – Another outstanding start from freshman Julie Sarratt against Coastal Carolina (16-23) led the Gamecocks (20-20) to a 1-0 win over the rival Chanticleers on Monday afternoon at Beckham Field.
Sarratt (6-6) dazzled the Chanticleers again, following up her no-hitter during the opening weekend of the season against Coastal with a one-hitter today. She walked one and struck out six.
The Gamecocks, who left eight on base, got the only run they needed in the sixth when junior third baseman Kelley Dillon hit a ball to left deep enough to allow pinch runner Jackie Slawson to score from third. Junior leftfielder Kaitlin Westfall drew the leadoff walk before ceding to Slawson, who moved to second on junior Molly Brossart’s sacrifice bunt and took third after an error on Coastal’s third baseman.
Junior shortstop Samie Garcia went 2-for-3 with a stolen base in the leadoff spot for South Carolina, while Brossart added a double.
The Chanticleers’ Ashley Bagwell (8-10) took the loss, giving up an unearned run on four hits and four walks while fanning two.
South Carolina heads to Spartanburg on Wednesday to face USC Upstate in a 5 p.m. matchup at Cyrill Stadium.
