Head Coach Ray Tanner:
Opening Statement
Great college baseball game tonight very fortunate to be the winning coach, because it could of gone a different direction for us. Roth battled his rear end off for us and kept us in a position to win. Jon Luke Jacobs for Auburn was really special he was mixing and matching sneaking and locating his fastball, changeup, his curveball was really good. He just seemed to throw a breaking ball in the zone he needed too and when he didn’t he would throw one that we would offer at. I think 9 strikeouts. He was very special. It was a pitchers’ dual and we were fortunate to push a run across. We stayed out of trouble because Walker had 3 picks over at first tonight. Jake Williams made a couple of nice plays in left, one great play, and I thought Marzilli did a nice job coming in on a ball earlier on in the game. It was a great win for us and Roth again kept us in a position to win.
With Anderson coming up and told him to bunt even at 2-2 any questions on pinch hitting for him or maybe taking the bunt off?
I could have and it crossed my mind Roth asked me when he exited did you announce me as the DH and I said “no Im going to leave you out of this.” He could of possibly been in that spot had I decided to do that. DeSean has had some pretty good at bats in his short stint. He hung in there and battled and got it down.
Leaving runners on base…
Well we did leave a bunch of runners on early and you know you think normally that’s gonna come back to haunt you when you leave those guys out there. We couldn’t come up with a hit. Jacobs really settled in. We were hitless from the fourth inning until the ninth. He got it going.
On Great defense…
We have been playing great defense. Sometimes though you don’t realize what the defense did for you, but it kept you out of trouble. When you are making plays sometimes it goes unnoticed, but when you are making plays you are keeping your team out of those deficit innings. You may trail, but you’re not down by much because you are able to stay in there with your defense and that’s been really important for us. No doubt about it.
Outfielder, Robert Beary
Started well…
Never expect something because of one hit. The guy pitched a great game, Roth pitched a great game. They are similar. They use all 3 pitches.
On his HBP in the 9th…
Coach said he likes to hang sliders and I was looking for something up to drive it but I just stayed in there and took the hit. Late in the game you can’t shy away from that in a close game. You got to stay in there take the hit and get on base.
Second Baseman, Scott Wingo
What he saw on his last at bat?
This game will humble you for sure. I was thinking at this last at bat here got to give it my all and it turned out well.
What did Jacobs do?
Mixed pitches well and hit spots got to give him credit he was pitching good.
On Beary getting HBP in the bottom of the 9th.
We knew for a tie game the most important thing is to get the leadoff guy on and when that happened I knew we were gonna get something going
Pitcher, Michael Roth
On how he felt…
I felt pretty good like I was locating well sometimes you have a couple innings like that. They did a good job of not striking out and got some hits today.
On Jake Williams catch…
Probably a ball he shouldn’t have dove for but it was a great play hopefully it will make it on the top 10.
Shortstop, Peter Mooney
Did you know that you would be leading off?
No discussion at all I didn’t know until I looked at the line up then I was like alright I got a job to do.
Was there a feeling in the dugout that you guys would find a way to win this one?
The team always finds a way to get it done. I always have a feeling that we will come out on top especially with Michael Roth on the mound he just deals.
