COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina head track coach Curtis Frye held a Celebrity Golf Classic as the inaugural event for the Frye Foundation, and celebrities such as Gamecock football coach Steve Spurrier, three-time Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee and former WBA heavyweight champion “Bonecrusher” Smith attended to help build awareness for diabetes.
The event was held at the Pine Needles Golf Lodge in Southern Pines, N.C., and jump-started an NCAA Championship week for Frye, who hosted the tournament Monday and a banquet Tuesday before flying to Bloomington, Ind., to help his team prepare for the NCAA Preliminary Round that runs Thursday to Sunday at Indiana University.
For two reports on the tournament including quotes from the attendees, read stories by Bret Strelow at the Fayetteville Obeserver and by Howard Ward at the Southern Pines Pilot.
