Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina junior outfielder Adam Matthews was selected in the 23rd round of the 2011 MLB Draft as the No. 695 overall pick by the Baltimore Orioles. Matthews is the sixth current Gamecock to be drafted this year. Jackie Bradley Jr. was selected in the supplemental round yesterday by the Boston Red Sox with Matt Price a sixth round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Scott Wingo an 11th round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Peter Mooney was selected in the 21st round by the Toronto Blue Jays with senior right-hander John Taylor selected in the 22nd round by the Seattle Mariners.
Matthews is hitting .269 (29-for-108) for the season with a pair of homers and 14 RBI to go along with 25 runs scored. Matthews has played in 30 games with 29 starts but has seen minimal action since straining his hamstring on April 16 vs. Vanderbilt.
