Head Coach Ray Tanner

Opening Statement…
(I’m) very happy today with the start we got from Colby Holmes, once again our starting pitching gave us a chance to win the game and the guys behind him came in and did a really good job for us. I think this is a really good weekend for us being able to win all three games against an Elon club that is very talented and will probably make a run in the Southern Conference. We did what we needed to do to win the game and I’d like to see us be a bit more offensive at times. Fortunately though we had a few runs on the board and we were able to pitch well.

On your pitching staff…
I think it is the reason we have had a chance to win games, because of our pitching. We have played pretty good defense, but we haven’t been a focused team offensively. We scored some runs and have been able to win some games. Our hitters are doing better and got out of the blocks early, but those two left-handers carved us up and gave Elon a chance to come back.

On the comfort level with this years pitching staff…
I’m happy with pitching staff overall. Having the experience we have in Roth, Price and Holmes and the confidence we have in our guys coming out of the bullpen. Are they untouchable, are the 1st round draft picks, that’s probably not the case however they are very good college pitchers with experience, so they will give you a chance if you play pretty good defense behind them.

On settling into the season…
I feel real comfortable. (I) didn’t get the hits this weekend, but we are 6-0 and I feel right at home.

On the pitching staff…
It’s unbelievable. I have never been a part of a pitching staff that is quite like this. It’s awesome to be a part of.

Junior RHP Colby Holmes
On the momentum of the game…
It means a lot for guys to go out and get some runs, these guys are great hitters. All four of my pitches were strikes starting out. And guys going out and hitting some runs just helps me get some confidence.

On this year’s team…
We can be just as good. Last year we were great as well. (Forrest) Koumas moving out and (Matt) Price moving in. Two great guys and you just can’t say whether we are better just yet, so we just need to go out with the mentality to do our best and see how it goes.

Freshman Outfielder Tanner English
On adjusting to the team…
Well I’m sure all of y’all know, Coach Tanner and Holbrook yell at me if I hit the ball too high in the air. They just want me to keep it on the ground cause that’s what I need to do to help the team out.

On the Carolina/Clemson rivalry…
Carolina Clemson series is a big rivalry in any sport. I grew up with a bunch of friends with split households. I hear you can’t really cheer for Clemson.

Freshman Infielder Conner Bright
On preparing for today’s game…
(I) Just needed to go out there today and just forget yesterday. Today I felt more comfortable and I think my play was a lot more comfortable.

On adjusting to playing for the Gamecocks…
Two strike hitting is the biggest adjustment for me. So I’ve been trying to hold it back.
