COLUMBIA, S.C. – Junior Samie Garcia from the South Carolina softball team has been named the AgSouth Athlete of the Week.
A Bell, Calif., native, Garcia had a hit in all seven games last week for the Gamecocks, extending her hitting streak to 19 games, the longest since 2008 for a Gamecock. She posted a .522 batting average on the week with two doubles, a triple and a homer. In front of 537 fans, many from a youth softball group led by her father, Garcia doubled home the tying run against UC Davis, one South Carolina would win 3-2 to end a perfect road trip to California.
The Gamecocks went 6-1 on the week, moving their record to 16-4 overall.
Garcia leads the Southeastern Conference in hits, ranks second in runs scored, stands third in batting average and is in the top 15 in on-base and slugging percentage, doubles and hit by pitches.
