– South Carolina vs. Davidson Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Ray Tanner Quotes
On the ability to get some pitchers in the game tonight…
I was glad that we got an opportunity to get Joel (Seddon) back out there. I guess it has been a month since he has pitched. He was pretty good. He was just a little bit off, but that is expected. The guy hasn’t been on the mound. He works hard, does his bullpens, but that was pretty good. That was a quality start for me. It was good to get Forrest (Koumas) back out there. He was a little erratic, but he was close enough to the zone. He got some outs, and we needed all of them. We rely on our pitching staff a lot, and we had to do it again tonight. We didn’t score enough runs. I thought (Brian) Russell pitched well for Davidson. He had pretty good stuff. He made some pitches when he needed to, to keep us out of run scoring situations. It ended up being a dogfight for us. We didn’t hit a lot and they didn’t hit a lot, and our pitching staff did a great job for us.
On the having to pitch Matt Price and Tyler Webb tonight…
You can say it made the difference in the game that we had our bullpen rested. We were going to pitch Webb for an inning and Price for an inning more than likely, regardless of how the game unfolded because I think both of them threw 15 pitches on the weekend. Tyler threw 17 tonight and Matt threw 21 or 22. We needed them. They had to pitch in pressure instead of just going out there and having an appearance. (Evan) Beal was good. We didn’t want to pitch him more than two, and that worked out for us. These non-conference games are always difficult. I know we seem to talk about them a little bit more, but they are all tough. Let’s just look at a couple of scores coming in here of the other games tonight. Two nothing, three nothing, two nothing, and a couple of other schools had close games against teams that come after them. That’s the case for us every time we play an in-state school or a Southern Conference school like Davidson tonight. They played very well against us.
On starting so many freshmen…
I knew starting Seddon, you look out there and you’ve got Grayson (Greiner), (Kyle Martin), Seddon, (Tanner) English, (TJ) Costen, and (Chase Vergason) for all intents and purposes is new. LB is new. There were a lot of new faces out there. The good news is that a lot of them have played. So, I don’t look at it too much as they are freshmen anymore. Still, you hate to put that many guys out there, but we were able to survive it.
South Carolina Player Quotes
Junior Pitcher, Matt Price
On getting an opportunity in the mid-week…
I talked to the coaches before the game and they asked me if I was ready to go tonight and I said “Yeah, in a save situation I’ll be ready.” I got the chance and came out and did my job.
On the upcoming series at Arkansas…
It is not going to be that long of a trip for us. We are flying out there, so it will be about an hour and thirty minutes. But, Arkansas is a tough place to play. I remember two years ago when I went out there for the first time, there were 12,000 fans every game and they didn’t leave until the last out. It is going to be tough, but we are just going to take it one game at a time. We’ll do what we have always been doing and try to battle and win.
Freshman Outfielder, Tanner English
On getting the opportunity to steal more bases…
I am just going to do whatever I can to help the team. If that is stealing bases, then I am cool with doing that.
On the upcoming series at Arkansas…
I am excited to play in an environment like that. Everyone is saying how excited they are to go to Arkansas and the environment there. It is going to be like playing here except for everyone is rooting against us. It will be a cool situation to play in.
Freshman Pitcher, Joel Seddon
On how it felt to be back on the mound…
I thought it felt really nice to be back out there and get on the mound. I tried to show everyone that I could get back in the groove of things. I was just trying to be patient. The coaches told me that I would get my opportunity, and I just did my best to show them what I’ve got tonight.
On his performance tonight…
I thought I did all right. I obviously wish I would have done better. My stuff was good early on. I had my slider and fastball working pretty well in the first inning. I might have gotten a little tired after the second inning, so my mechanics kind of got a little sporadic. I just tried to focus and throw strikes.
Junior Outfielder, Evan Marzilli
On holding the lead at the end…
They have a good team so you never want to let anyone back in the door. Luckily our pitching came through tonight. They pitched some great innings there late. We’re thankful we could get through that one.
On breaking out of a slow stretch at the plate…
I feel like I have just been hitting a lot of balls at people – had some bad luck here and there. But, you can’t really consume yourself too much with stats. You just have to go up there and have some good at bats. That’s what I tried doing tonight and luckily it worked out.
