COLUMBIA, S.C. — Coastal Carolina starting pitcher Tyler Herb tossed a complete-game gem, and the Chanticleers provided plenty of run support on their way to an 11-1 victory over Manhattan on Saturday in game three of the 2012 NCAA Columbia Regional.
Herb (9-2) surrendered just one unearned run and two hits and struck out five batters in his first career complete game to keep Coast Carolina’s season alive. The Chanticleers improve to 42-18 on the year and will face the loser of today’s South Carolina-Clemson game on Sunday at noon.
With the loss, the Jaspers conclude their season with a 33-27 record.
Coastal Carolina generated plenty offense on 15 hits to support Herb, with eight starters contributing at least one hit. Sophomore Jacob May led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, including a home run and three RBIs. Rich Witten, Tucker Frawley, Ted Blackman and Daniel Bowman tallied two hits apiece.
Manhattan starting hurler Scott McClennan (2-6) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. He also had two strikeouts.
Coastal Carolina opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Blackman led things off with a single to right field, advanced to second on a balk and moved to third on an infield single by May. Bowman then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Blackman and give the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead.
The Jaspers used some aggressive base running and took advantage of a Coastal Carolina miscue to knot the game at 1-1 in the sixth. Second baseman Nick Camastro drew a leadoff walk and then stole second to set up a sacrifice attempt by Kyle Murphy with no outs. Murphy laid down the bunt to move Camastro to third, but the Chanticleer’s third baseman threw the ball away, allowing Camastro to score and Murphy to reach safely.
However, the Chanticleers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. May and Bowman singled and doubled, respectively, to begin the inning. Witten followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate May, and Alex Buccilli then drove in Bowman with a sacrifice fly to center to give Coastal Carolina a 3-1 advantage.
May helped Coastal Carolina put the game out of reach in the seventh by highlighting a six-run outburst with a three-run home run to right field, as the Chanticleers built a 9-1 lead.
The fourth game of the Columbia Regional between South Carolina and rival Clemson is slated to begin at 4 p.m. today at Carolina Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPNU, and live stats are available at GamecocksOnline.com.
