Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina senior left-hander Michael Roth has been selected in the ninth round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Roth was the No. 297 overall pick in the draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Roth is the fourth current Gamecock player to be selected in this year’s draft. The Baltimore Orioles earlier selected Christian Walker and Matt Price with the Arizona Diamondbacks also taking Evan Marzilli.

A two-time captain and the 2012 SEC H. Boyd McWhorter Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Roth is 6-1 with a 2.68 ERA in 16 starts with 107.1 innings pitched. He has 76 strikeouts to 35 walks and opponents are batting just .215 against him. In SEC games, Roth went 3-1 with a 3.43 ERA. He hurled 65.2 innings in 10 league starts. Roth earned Consensus All-America honors in 2011 and was CollegeBaseballInsider.com’s National Player of the Year. He started both the championship-clinching games of the 2010 and 2011 College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

Roth has a career record of 23-6 at South Carolina. He has 90 career appearances as a Gamecock, second only to current teammate Matt Price. He also has hurled 324.2 innings in his career, just four innings shy of the Top 10 career list.
