GREENVILLE, S.C. — Jaklin Alawi from the South Carolina women’s tennis team knocked off the nation’s No. 18-ranked player Saturday on the second day of play in the Furman Fall Classic at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
Alawi, ranked No. 63, defeated No. 18 Brynn Boren from Tennessee in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the consolation semifinals of the top flight. Alawi will face No. 26 Zoe De Bruycker of North Carolina in the finals of the backdraw Sunday morning.
The Gamecocks did not fair as well in the other matches of the day. In singles flight two, Josefin Andersson took at 6-1, 6-0 loss to No. 81 Francesca Segarelli of Florida State in the backdraw. Ximena Siles Luna defaulted her match to Clemson’s Tristen Dewar in flight three and Alex Martin retired from her match with Furman’s Katherine Oudin in flight four prior to the start of the third set.
Alawi and Dominika Kanakova lost in the consolation finals of doubles flight one to No. 34-ranked Boren and Kata Szekely of Tennessee by an 8-5 count. In the third-place match of flight two, Andersson and Siles Luna suffered an 8-2 setback to Daneika Borthwick and Mia Vriens of Florida State.
Alex Martin teamed with Alabama’s Natalia Maynetto for doubles and the duo took an 8-1 loss to North Carolina’s Zoe De Bruycker and Laura Slater in flight three.
Play concludes in the Furman Fall Classic on Sunday with singles matches beginning at 9 a.m.
