Columbia, S.C. – Senior right-hander Colby Holmes pitched five perfect innings and combined with three other pitchers to hurl a no-hitter in seven innings of play as Garnet defeated Black 5-0 to win the Garnet & Black World Series on Sunday afternoon at Carolina Stadium. Sophomore outfielder Tanner English was 2-for-2 with a run scored and reached base three times. Graham Saiko, Grayson Greiner and Connor Bright added RBI hits as well to lead Garnet to the victory.
Garnet broke ahead 1-0 in the second inning with an unearned run. Walks to Greiner and Brison Celek gave Garnet a pair of base runners. With two outs, Greiner would score as Anthony Paulsen reached base on a fielding error by shortstop Joey Pankake.
The lead increased to 2-0 in the fourth inning. Kyle Martin doubled with one out, stole third base and scored on a RBI base hit up the middle off the bat of Bright. It would remain that way until the seventh inning. English tripled with one out and scored on a RBI double down the line by Saiko. After walks to freshmen D.C. Arendas and Max Schrock loaded the bases, Saiko would score on a wild pitch from Alex Satterfield. Garnet’s fifth run came off the bat of Greiner, who drove in Arendas with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Holmes was effective the entire afternoon retiring all 15 batters he faced. He struck out six batters. Right-handers Austin Hill, Evan Beal and Tyler Jackson also threw for the Garnet team. Black starting pitcher Tyler Webb went 3.1 innings and allowed two runs, one earned on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts.

Carolina owns more overall wins than any SEC team in the last 13 years and more conference wins than any SEC team in the last 13 years with a 240-148 record. South Carolina is the only SEC school to record 40 or more wins each season from 2000-present and the only SEC school to reach the NCAA Regional every season in the last 13 years.
