COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina men’s soccer goalkeeper Alex Long has been named AgSouth Athlete of the Week.

Long played just one half against No. 25 Kentucky on Sunday, but the Gamecock netminder played a stellar 45 minutes in frame, posting a challenging four saves in the fifth Gamecock shutout of the season. Late in the contest Long was challenged with several shots, including some at point-blank range, that he was able to save. With just 11 minutes remaining in the match, Long posted a save on a strike from UK’s Matt Lodge over the crossbar, and another from Lodge from point-blank range just six yards from goal. The anchor of the defense, Long and the Gamecocks played solid the remainder of the match to secure the win.

Prior to Sunday’s match, Long had played sparingly of late due to an ankle sprain. He has logged 1411 minutes in goal, with a 1.78 goals against average and 52 saves on the year.
