The South Carolina women’s golf team shot a final round 289 (+1) on Tuesday afternoon at Yeamans Hall to finish in sixth place at the Cougar Classic. The Gamecocks finished the tournament with a three-round total of 872 (+8).

“Today we battled back really well,” said Head women’s golf coach Kalen Harris. “We had a tough start and I’m proud of the way they came back. Our first round was really good and we struggled in the second round but we did a lot of great things in the tournament and we have a lot of talent. Overall a lot of positive, and we’ll get to work things we need to fix this week in practice.”

After shooting a third-round 2-under 70, junior Justine Dreher concluded the tournament in a tie for sixth place with a total of 214 (-2). Dreher, a native of Valbonne, France, recorded a team-best 13 birdies along with 11 bogeys.

Samantha Swinehart finished in a tie for 10th place, which is a new career-best for the senior. Swinehart turned in a 3-over 75 on Tuesday for a three-round total of 216 (E). Swinehart had the only ace of the tournament while also tallying six birdies and eight bogeys.

Senior Suzie Lee finished next on the leaderboard for South Carolina posting a third-round 68, which ties a career-best, for a total of 218 (+2) and landing her in a tie for 19th. Lee tallied six birdies, five of which came in round three, as well as eight bogeys.

Freshman Katelyn Dambaugh and sophomore Mary Fran Hillow concluded the tournament in a tie for 37th with totals of 221 (+5). They shot third rounds of 74 (+2) and 73 (+1), respectively. Dambaugh recorded nine birdies and 14 bogeys in her collegiate debut while Hillow, a native of Orlando, Fla., had seven birdies, eight bogeys, and two double bogeys.

Sophomore Sarah Schmelzel turned in 2-over 74 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 44th. Schmelzel had a three-round total of 222 (+6) while registering five birdies and 11 bogeys.

Tenth-ranked Florida won the tournament with a total of 859 (-5) and Clemson finished just one stroke behind to take second place.

Florida’s Anna Young won the individual title finishing with a 5-under 211. In a three-way tie for second place were NC State’s Brittany Marchand, and Clemson’s Ashlan Ramsey and Sloan Shanahan all with totals of 212 (-4).

The Gamecocks will be back in action Sep. 20-22 as they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship.
