TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Junior Meredith Mill posted her fourth top-10 finish of the season, helping South Carolina to an eighth-place showing in the White Race at the Indiana State Pre-National Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
Mill came within nine seconds of breaking her personal best in the outing, finishing the 6,000-meter race in 21:20.52. Freshman Mary Reiser did top her previous best by 1.8 seconds, closing at 21:53.20 in a 33rd-place showing. Three sophomores rounded out the scoring, with Anna Todd (70th, 22:22.84) just two seconds off her previous 6K best. Stephanie Berger did break her personal record, going under 23 minutes for the first time with her 22:50.47 mark to finish 109th. Christine Kent crossed the line in 23:02.14 to finish 127th.
Senior Penny Boswell ranked 142nd overall with 23:13.76, while freshman Martha McCoy came in 150th at 23:19.50.
The Gamecocks beat four teams that stand in the regional rankings in other regions, topping Georgia Tech, Nevada, Pittsburgh and Texas Tech. South Carolina also downed all but Virginia Tech from its own region, including beating Clemson, among others.
In the Open Race, freshman Sarah Falta finished 64th at 23:38.84, with sophomores Alex Mullin (74th, 23:53.78), Brandy Wybersky (76th, 23:54.86) and Allie Whitley (88th, 24:15.91) coming in close behind. Freshman Brittany Day placed 100th with a 25:22.30 time.
The Gamecocks take on the field in the Southeastern Conference Championships on Fri., Nov. 1, hosted by the University of Florida at Mark Bostic Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
