WILMINGTON, N.C. –

The South Carolina women’s golf team shot a 12-over 300 on Friday at the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall to finish in third place after one round of the Landfall Tradition hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Alabama is currently in first place after shooting a 3-under 285. Duke finished the day in second place with a score of 295 (+7).

Katelyn Dambaugh carded the low round for the Gamecocks and is currently in a tie for second place. The freshman tallied four birdies and two bogeys while shooting a 1-under 71, which marks her fifth round of par or better on the season.

Senior Samantha Swinehart and sophomore Sarah Schmelzel both turned in a 4-over 76 to finish the day in a tie for 25th place. After opening play on the No. 10 hole, Swinehart shot a 40 (+4) on the back side and registered two birdies and two bogeys on the front side for an even-par 36. Schmelzel recorded two birdies and shot a 1-over 37 on the back side while carding a 3-over 39 on the front side.

Sophomore Mary Fran Hillow finished next on the leaderboard for South Carolina in a tie for 33rd place after shooting a 5-over 77. Hillow recorded two birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys on the day.

Junior Justine Dreher carded an 11-over 83 in the first round to finish in a tie for 78th place.

Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow is currently at the top of the individual leaderboard with a first round score of 70 (-2). Along with Dambaugh, Jackie Chang of North Carolina, Hannah Collier of Alabama and Emma Talley of Alabama are in a tie for second place with a score of 71 (-1).

Second round play is scheduled to begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
