Garnet Defeats Black 7-3, in Game 2 of Garnet and Black World Series
Marcus Mooney’s two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie and led to four runs as the Garnet squad defeated Black 7-3 on Saturday afternoon in game two of the Garnet & Black World Series. Garnet has won both games. The series concludes on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Carolina Stadium.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Mooney delivered with his second double of the afternoon to score both Weber Pike and Ray Murphy to give the Garnet squad a two-run lead. Garnet added some insurance then with Jordan Gore scoring on a fielding error and Tanner English driving in Mooney with a RBI single to give Garnet the 7-3 advantage.
The Black team drew first blood in the contest in as Gene Cone led off the game with a double and stole both third base and home to put Black ahead 1-0. After being held scoreless through the first three innings, Garnet broke ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth as Gore drove in a run and scored on Mooney’s first double of the afternoon, a two base hit to left-center that gave Garnet a one-run lead.
Black reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth after five consecutive walks with Matt Williams and Gene Cone each bringing in a run. Garnet tied it up in the bottom of the fifth taking advantage of a fielding error.
Freshman left-hander John Parke started on the mound for the Garnet and allowed three runs in 5.2 innings.
South Carolina won the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship in 2010 and 2011 at the College World Series. South Carolina has 11 College World Series appearances, including six in the last 12 years. South Carolina is the only school with 200 or more wins in the last four years (2010 to the present) with a 201-70 record, and the Gamecocks own the second-highest win total in the nation in the last 14 years (2000 to the present) with a 669-271 record. South Carolina is one of five schools to appear in the NCAA Regional every season in the last 14 years, including 11 NCAA Super Regional appearances in that span, one of only two schools to accomplish the feat.
