COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley announced that Doniyah Cliney (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University and play for the Gamecocks. Cliney will have four years of eligibility beginning with the 2014-15 academic year.

“We’re so happy to have Doniyah Cliney as part of our Gamecock family,” Staley said. “She brings a certain toughness on both sides of the basketball. We look for her to come in and have an immediate impact on both ends. She can get to the basketball at will and create her own shot. She gives us length on the perimeter.”

Cliney is a six-foot guard who helped her high school team to a 33-1 record and the Group 2 State Championship last season, averaging 10.3 points and 1.9 assists en route to all-state honorable mention status. Equally adept on defense as she is on offense, Cliney is rated as high as the No. 13 guard in the Class of 2014 by ProspectNation.com.

Cliney joins Kaydra Duckett (Columbia, S.C./Dreher), who signed on Wednesday, in Staley’s 2014 class.
