EARLYSVILLE, Va. – On a pleasant day on the Panorama Farms 6K course, South Carolina posted a 14th-place showing in the NCAA Southeast Regional to finish the 2013 season.

“Meredith has been sick this past week but made her way into the top 20,” commented Gamecock assistant track coach in charge of distance and cross country Andrew Allden, “She could not quite hang on, but she set a great example, giving all she had as she has all year.”

Two Gamecocks posted new personal bests in Friday’s race. Freshman Mary Reiser broke into the top 30 with her time of 21:21.3, over 12 seconds better than her SEC Championships time. Reiser passed 15 competitors after the halfway point to finish 29th and rank second on the team. “Mary continued her outstanding season by running even better than she did at the SEC meet,” Allden said. “Top 30 is just outstanding for a true freshman.”

Sophomore Stephanie Berger continued her improvement, shaving over eight seconds off her time from two weeks ago and more than three seconds on her best, placing 122nd with a time of 22:47.3. Berger moved up 25 spots in the last 3,000 meters. Between Reiser and Berger stood sophomore Anna Todd, who finished 113th with a time of 22:42.2.

Senior Penny Boswell ended her collegiate cross country career with a 23:08.5 time, finishing 152nd. Freshman Martha McCoy ranked sixth on the team and 158th overall with her 23:12.3 clocking. Sophomore Christine Kent came in 172nd with her time of 23:21.3.

“The rest of the squad held up their end on a challenging course as we finished 14th after entering ranked 15th,” added Allden. “Of course as a Gamecock, it was nice to beat Clemson for the second time this year.

Virginia claimed the team title on its home course, topping William & Mary by 12 points. The Tribe’s Emily Stites won the race at 19:57.5, 10 seconds faster than Kentucky’s Cally Macumber.

The Gamecocks’ focus now move towards indoor track season, which begins in January.
