Jeannelle Scheper Named AgSouth Athlete of the Week
Feb. 10, 2014
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Gamecock track and field star Jeannelle Scheper has been named AgSouth Athlete of the Week.
Scheper stayed undefeated in 2014, capturing her third-straight high jump win of the season in championship division at the Armory Collegiate Invitational, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA)’s National Meet of the Week. After entering the competition at 5’7″ 1/4 (1.71m), she wrapped up the win on her fourth first-attempt clearance. Her mark of 6’2″ (1.88m) set a new meet record at the prestigious event, and the current NCAA leader was rewarded with the Evelyn Lawler Lewis Award, given to the most outstanding female competitor.
The recognition is the second in South Carolina history (Demetria Washington, 2001). Scheper topped a 1-2 South Carolina finish in a women’s high jump field that featured six athletes ranked in the nation’s top 25, including Bowerman Watch List member Lindsay Vollmer. Ultimately, the No. 15 Gamecocks returned home from New York City with a third-place finish in their first scored meet of the season.
