Head Coach Chad Holbrook
Opening Statement
Coach Pollock always does a terrific job and every time we play PC it seems like it could go either way. Kehner pitched a great game for them today. He was teammates with one of our pitchers, Reed Scott; they were quite a tandem in high school, we knew that coming in, the pitchability was there. I thought we’d do a better job against him but give the kid credit, he stuffed us there for five and two thirds innings and we were lucky to get a big hit on Connor Bright’s bat. That hit, and once we got our first run; it let the air out of the dugout a little bit and we relaxed and played the rest of the way. We were pleased with our pitching staff, Curt Britt kind of matched him pitch for pitch and we got out of some jams there and he showed some backbone. Josh Reagan and Cody Mincey were special finishing it off. So it was a good win for us, a clean game, another game with no errors. I love that when you pitch and play defense you have a chance, and that’s what we did today.
On playing a close game
We need to play in competitive environments to see who we are, we are still learning who we are. We have some new guys we need to put in tight situations so we can see how they react. And that’s why it was really good to see Josh and Cody pitch the way they pitched with the game on the line cause we hadn’t seen that yet in a tight spot. We think we know who they are, but you never really know until the lights are on and there are 7,500 people in the stands and it was their first opportunity to pitch in an environment where the game could go either way. So that was good to see and we are still learning a lot about our team, I didn’t really help my team a lot today; I made a couple mistakes. I told them after the game I would try to help them more on Friday.
On Kyle Martin
He is confident, he is strong and he has hit since we came back August and he hasn’t stopped; I hope he doesn’t. I think the fact that he knows he is going to be in there everyday gives him a sense of calm. We’ve got him in the right kind of park; the ball travels to right field and he can put up numbers here. He also plays a really good first base and he is a good baseball player. I’m glad he is playing the way he is capable of playing He knows what he is looking for; when he gets that pitch he puts a good swing on it and he has been doing that since August.
Kyle Martin, Jr. 1B
On his home run
It barely got out. Runner on first and second we were up one, I was just trying to score another run or two. He ended up leaving a changeup high and just got a good piece of it and it got up in the wind.
Connor Bright, Jr. OF
On his double
We kept it interesting for a while, and I knew I was going to get a good pitch to hit. I got a fastball up and elevated it; I think I got it just about as far as Kyle did but it hit the top of the wall and came back in.
On the Presbyterian pitcher keeping them off balance
Yeah, he was definitely keeping us off balance; he was throwing a lot of speed. Coach got us all together and said keep your feet quiet, which means try to hit the pitch the other way, wait on the pitch to get there, don’t try to do too much. So we changed our approach.
