HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. –

The South Carolina women’s golf team shot a 10-over 294 on Friday at Long Cove Club and is currently in fourth place after the opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.

“We hung in there really well today,” said head coach Kalen Harris. “It was a tough day to play. The conditions were pretty nasty with rain and wind and cold, but overall it was a pretty good day for the Gamecocks. We’re in a relatively good position here, I think the weather is supposed to turn around and we’ll see what we can do the next couple of days. Katelyn [Dambaugh] played a good round and so did Samantha [Swinehart]. Overall Justine [Dreher], Sarah [Schmelzel] and Jia Xin [Yang] did play well; their scores don’t show as well as they played. We definitely have the potential to put some better rounds in tomorrow. Everyone is playing really well and I’m looking forward to seeing what the weekend brings.”

Duke is at the top of the leaderboard with a first-round score of 284 (E). Just one stroke ahead of South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Alabama both carded a 9-over 293 and are currently tied for second place.

Katelyn Dambaugh led the way for the Garnet and Black, firing an even-par 71. The freshman tallied two birdies on the back side to finish the day in a tie for seventh place.

Senior Samantha Swinehart carded a 1-over 72 to finish next on the leaderboard for South Carolina in a tie for tenth place. Swinehart tallied five birdies in the opening round, two on the front side and three on the back side.

Sophomore Sarah Schmelzel recorded two birdies on her way to a 4-over 75 and is currently tied for 32nd place

After carding a 76 (+5), junior Justine Dreher concluded the day in a tie for 45th place. Dreher shot a 1-over 37 on the front side but came up with a 4-over 39 on the back side.

Jia Xin Yang shot a 6-over 77 in the opening round to finish the day in a tie for 53rd place.

Competing as individuals, Suzie Lee and Mary Fran Hillow carded a first-round 77 (+6) and 83 (+12), respectively. Lee is currently in a tie for 53rd place while Hillow is tied for 80th place.
