COLUMBIA, S.C. – On a rain-shortened first day of the 21st Annual Weems Baskin Invitational, South Carolina redshirt junior Joshua Suttmeier recorded the Gamecocks lone on the afternoon in the men’s javelin at Weems Baskin Track.
The All-American hit a mark of 188-1 (57.33m) into a head wind on his second throw that held up for the win. In the day’s final event that ended as the rain began to pick up, redshirt junior Walker Selby set a new person record in the hammer throw by posting a mark of 174-4 (53.15m). Selby would place sixth overall in the event.
On the women’s side, sophomore Olivia Hassler led the Gamecocks in the javelin as she recorded a throw of 124-0 (37.79m) on the her second attempt of which held up for second place. After fouling on her first two attempts, redshirt sophomore Jemekia Wilson posted a mark of 95-11 (29.23) on her third attempt to move on to the finals where she would finished seventh. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Graham was two spots behind her in ninth with a throw of 88-4 (26.93m).
Field events will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m., ET with the women’s discus. Running events are set to start at 11 a.m., with the women’s 5,000 meters.
