Gamecocks Finish in Second Place At Bryan National Collegiate

March 30, 2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. –

The South Carolina women’s golf team shot a third-round 308 (+20) on Sunday at the Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center to take second place at the Bryan National Collegiate. The Gamecocks finished with a total score of 903 (+39). This marks the Gamecocks’ sixth consecutive top-five finish this season.

“The team played through consistent 20-30 miles per hour winds today with gusts over 40 miles per hour,” explained head Coach Kalen Harris. “It was extremely cold with light showers and sleet at times. These were definitely some of the harshest golfing conditions that I have ever experienced. I am extremely proud of the team’s mental toughness today and their comeback in the second and third rounds after a slow start to day one.”

Duke won the tournament after posting a three-round score of 882 (+18). Wake Forest finished two strokes behind South Carolina to take third place.

The Gamecocks had two golfers place in the top-ten with junior Justine Dreher and senior Samantha Swinehart finishing in seventh place and a tie for ninth place, respectively. Both golfers have now placed in the top-ten three times this season. Dreher carded a 4-over 76 on Sunday for a three-round score of 221 (+5) while Swinehart shot a 5-over 77 for a total score of 223 (+7).

Sarah Schmelzel finished next on the individual leaderboard for the Garnet and Black after carding an 80 (+8) in the final round. Schmelzel tied for 27th place with a three-round score of 230 (+14).

Katelyn Dambaugh climbed 20 spots up the leaderboard to finish the tournament in a tie for 50th place. The freshman carded a 5-over 77 on Sunday, giving her a total score of 233 (+17).

Sophomore Mary Fran Hillow also made a move up the leaderboard as she finished in a tie for 56th place. Hillow shot a third-round 78 (+6) for a total score of 234 (+18).

Competing as an individual, Suzie Lee finished with an 18-over 234 after carding an 80 (+8) in the final round. Lee concluded the tournament in a tie for 56th place.

Celine Boutier of Duke finished in first place on the individual leaderboard with a three-round score of 216 (E). Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson took second place with a 1-over 217.

The Gamecocks return to action April 4-6 as they travel to Tempe, Ariz., for the PING ASU Invitational.
