Quarles Honored at University's 2014 Women of Excellence Awards

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina track and field assistant head coach Delethea Quarles was honored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs in collaborate with Carolina Dining as a woman who has made a difference at the 2014 Women of Excellence Awards on Monday.

The honor recognizes influential women (students, faculty and staff) who have enriched the lives of others on campus and who have made significant contributions to the university community.

Quarles is in her 17th season with the Gamecock track and field program, and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2005. In addition to her primary responsibilities of multi-event athletes and jumps, Quarles also oversees eligibility and is the team’s academic liaison. The program has seen great success in the academic arena and Quarles has guided three student-athletes to national Scholar Athlete of the Year honors.

Not just a success at the collegiate level, Quarles has extensive international experience. She has been appointed to the Team USA staff for the last two IAAF World Championships. Most recently, Quarles was named jumps and multis coach for the women’s team for the 2013 event in Moscow. Her athletes medaled in three of five events.

Quarles is on the Midlands Board of Directors for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and is an active member of the Bible Way Church of Atlas Road. She also volunteers at the Epworth Children’s Home.
