Gamecocks in Sixth Place After Two Rounds at the SEC Championship

April 19, 2014

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –

The sixth-ranked South Carolina women’s golf team shot a second-round 11-over 299 and is in sixth place through two rounds of the SEC Championship. The Gamecocks entered second round play in fifth place after carding a 301 (+13) in the first round, which resumed at 8 a.m. CT after being suspended on Friday.

“The team did a good job,” said head coach Kalen Harris. “We finished up really well. There’s obviously a little bit of adversity [stopping play and restarting the next day] but that is part of golf. We had a really tough opening nine holes the first day but they responded with a great back nine. We’ll obviously have to go low tomorrow to still be in the hunt [for the title], but they’re a surprising group and you never know when they’re going to take it low. We have five players that all have the ability to shoot really low, so we just have to hang in there and be positive.”

Vanderbilt is currently in first place with a total score of 585 (+9). Arkansas and LSU round out the top three with scores of 591 (+15) and 592 (+16), respectively. South Carolina finished the day with a two-round score of 600 (+24).

Junior Justine Dreher finished highest on the individual leaderboard for the Garnet and Black in a tie for 11th place. Dreher shot a 1-over 73 in the first round and a 2-over 74 in the second round, giving her a total score of 147 (+3)

Sarah Schmelzel has a two-round score of 149 (+5) and is currently tied for 17th place. The sophomore carded a 2-over 74 in the first round and a 3-over 75 in the second round.

Freshman Katelyn Dambaugh shot a first-round 78 (+6) and fired a 1-over 73 in the second round while tallying two birdies and an eagle. Damabaugh finished the day tied for 24th place with a total score of 151 (+7).

Senior Suzie Lee is currently tied for 36th place after shooting rounds of 76 (+4) and 77 (+5) for a total of 153 (+9).

Senior Samantha Swinehart concluded the day in a tie for 59th place with a total score of 158 (+14). Swinehart carded an 80 (+80) in the first round and a 78 (+6) in the second round.
