Auburn Head Coach Clint Myers
Opening Statement
I want to compliment Columbia and South Carolina for putting on a quality tournament. Everything has been phenomenal. They are a great team, great coach, and they will do well in the playoffs. We are excited. I thought we played well. Things went our way tonight and we just have to keep things going.
On facing South Carolina for a fourth straight time…
We had two pretty even teams. It was pretty nice, we knew what they were going to do and they knew what we were going to do. For a first game, it was better to face them than one of the three teams we never played all season. The people here have been phenomenal so we stayed two days and relaxed and had good workout days. We played well tonight.
Auburn sophomore second baseman Emily Carosone
On opening the game with a first pitch homerun…
We have seen that pitcher so many times; I was just waiting for it. I was ready. I wanted to start it off with a good hit.
Auburn sophomore shortstop Kelsey Bogaards
On team’s mindset after South Carolina tied the game in the 5th…
With this team, I always know we are going to come back and fight. I had confidence in our offense and I knew we were going to have our pitchers’ backs the whole time no matter what.
On a game high three hits…
I saw the ball well tonight. It was about time. I was doing anything to get on base.
South Carolina Head Coach Beverly Smith
Opening Statement
You know, facing Auburn for the fourth time, if you were here for all four games, all four games with South Carolina-Auburn have been exciting, and tonight proved to be the same thing. Certainly, I wish we would have executed better, and I think it’s this time of year where the team that plays best on game day is going to win. And unfortunately, that was Auburn tonight. But, I tell you, I liked our girls’ fight. I thought we got back in the game, we just dug our hole early.
On the comeback…
Absolutely. I certainly thought, I know we were down early but I never count our offense out and I thought there was a lot of game left. Certainly, we were familiar with their pitchers and we did. We started making good contact on the ball and had some big hits from Victoria (Williams) and Ashlyn (Masters) both.
On the feeling shift in the game with Williams’ hit…
I thought that we were gaining momentum. We had made the pitching change, I thought we had quieted Auburn’s bats for a little bit there and we certainly felt good about the momentum shift in our direction. Truthfully, the crowd was great too. I thought we felt the crowd coming back with us. I was feeling the momentum for sure.
South Carolina senior utility player Ashlyn Masters
On tying the game…
I knew all week, and the past weekend, they were hitting me inside. So I was sitting on the inside pitch and I just saw the ball big and I let my swing take over.
On the frustration of letting the comeback slip away…
Yeah, I mean that’s always disappointing when you don’t have the win in your favor, but that was a tough ballgame and I felt like the whole team had a big part, a big role, each player. So, we came out with a fight.
South Carolina freshman infielder Victoria Williams
On the key to her playing so well…
For me, I just went in with the mentality, “you will hit great today.” And that is what I kept telling myself in my at-bats. This past weekend, they had been jamming me inside and throwing me the change up, but I knew that I could whip my bathead through, and I just kept telling myself, “You will hit great today.”
