COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team finished the 2014 season ranked 26th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, it was announced Tuesday.
The Gamecocks posted a 17-11 record this season and went 6-7 in SEC play. The No. 26 ranking is their best of the year and their highest finish since the 2010 squad posted a No. 19 final billing. South Carolina’s 17 wins is also the most since the 2010 team won the same number of matches.
After a 10-8 record and a 1-6 start to conference play, the Gamecocks closed out the season by winning seven of their final 10 matches with their only losses coming to teams that finished the year ranked in the top 11 (Duke – 5, Alabama – 6, Vanderbilt – 11). During the final stretch, the Gamecocks scored wins against Ole Miss (28, 2x), Kentucky (29), Ohio State (37), LSU (42) and Arkansas (59). South Carolina also advanced to its 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament and scored a first-round win over Ohio State before falling to Duke.
Final rankings for individuals will be released Wednesday, June 4.
