COLUMBIA, S.C. – Gamecock head men’s basketball coach Frank Martin attended Academy Sports + Outdoors’ Back-To-School Donation Event on Tuesday morning at the newest Academy location in the midlands, near the Harbison shopping district. The event was the final community outreach event of the “8K In 8 Days Campaign” for Gamecock men’s basketball.

The event opened at Academy Sports with 50 children from the Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands receiving a gift card for back-to-school shopping in the store. Martin spoke to the kids before members of the staff accompanied the children while shopping. Martin, along with Cocky and Gamecock cheerleaders, helped the kids shop for school gear before signing autographs and taking photos.

Martin spoke about the Academy event and what it means to the children involved.

“It’s (the event) awesome,” Martin said. “Hats off to Academy Sports for doing this for these kids. These kids running around the store at the end of July with the school year starting next month and getting a gift card like we were talking about a couple minutes ago (before start of shopping) and getting some nice things that maybe they can show when that school year starts. I’ve been in those shoes. I understand what a moment that is when that’s put in front of you, so hats off to Academy Sports and happy to be here and be a part of it.”

Josh Miller, regional marketing specialist for Academy echoed Martin’s thoughts.

“We’ve got a wonderful partnership with the University of South Carolina and it’s back to school season. It’s crazy; the summer just started, but the kids are already starting to think about going back to school. Giving back is a big part of not only Academy Sports, but also South Carolina, so we thought it would be great to get everybody together and give some kids some free gift cards to get a head start on back to school.”
