BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference on Friday unveiled its women’s cross country preseason watch list. League teams begin their 2014 seasons starting next week.
South Carolina’s two athletes to be named to the watch list were sophomore Mary Reiser and redshirt junior Kayla Lampe.
Reiser earned SEC All-Freshman Team honors a year ago, placing 33rd at 21:33.77 in the SEC Championships (6K). She was named SEC Freshman Runner of the Week (10/15/2013) after posting the sixth-fastest 5K in Gamecock history (17:39.0), finishing fifth overall in the Royal XC Challenge. The Annapolis, Md., native was second on the team in six of the seven races in which she competed in and finished in 29th overall at the NCAA Southeast Regional at 21:21.3.
Lampe did not compete during the 2013 season due to injury, but did garner SEC All-Freshman Team honors in 2012 and second-team All-SEC accolades with a 13th-place showing at the SEC Championships (21:02.30). Later that season, she earned All-Southeast Region honors, finishing eighth with a time of 20:40.43, which is the fastest 6K time in South Carolina history. The native of Downingtown, Pa., was the Gamecocks’ top finisher in all events she competed in in 2012, including winning the Black Section of the 2012 NCAA Pre-Nationals at Louisville with a 6K time of 21:03.5.
South Carolina opens the season on Aug. 30 at Hilton Field on Ft. Jackson with the Carolina Invitational beginning at 9 a.m., ET.
